Seaford Premiers will start life in LSL Saturday Premier division on Saturday with a home fixture against Montpelier, kicking off at 12.00pm in Rockfield Park.
Paulie Morris's side have nominally been promoted a division during the off-season, but in essence it's the same section in which they finished mid-table during 2022/23. That means they'll renew rivalries with Saturday's visitors, although the game is unlikely to witness as much drama as their previous clash in Blackrock. On that occasion, Collie Barrett netted a quick first-half hat-trick to put the Penguins in a commending position, but they collapsed to trail 3-4 early in the second half, only for another astonishing late turnaround as Cian McCabe smashed home a last-gasp winner to secure the first of what would be three straight home wins for Seaford. In the reverse league match, MP came out on top by 2-1, but Seaford got their own back when the sides met for a third time in the Superleague competition, as a Stephen Canavan brace helped the Penguins to a 4-2 victory. Seaford concluded their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Dublin Hospitals FC at Rockfield Park.
The Penguins hit the front inside three minutes when Mike O'Neill nodded in a typically vicious corner kick delivery from MJ Tierney, but the medics leveled through Brian Gaffney on 13. Seaford had the better of the play for the rest of the half, but the doctors had a strong spell early in the second, with Seaford indebted to Oisin Geoghegan for a couple of smart saves. But the hosts finished strongly and secured the win courtesy of Tierney's spot kick after a foul on Shane Gilroy. The Premiers completed their pre-season preparations by deliver a strong second half performance to record a 5-1 win over our local neighbours Booterstown United..
It was a disappointing first-half showing from the Penguins, who trailed 0-1 at the break, but within five minutes of the restart Seaford had hit the front through goals from Jamie McCaul and Conor Fennell, and the same pair each grabbed a second later in the half, with Eddie Xiang notching in between. Paulie Morris's men begin their LSL campaign with a home fixture against MP FC on Saturday. The club was made very welcome by our hosts Strand Celtic on our recent pre-season trip for a friendly at the beautiful Strandhill Community Park Ground in Co. Sligo.
The match ended in a 4-3 win for Celtic. Seaford's own Sligo native Shane Gilroy gave the visitors an early lead but Dylan Martin leveled from the spot, with still only 4 minutes play.ed. The pacy striker Martin added a second before half time before completing his hat-trick after the break, with Kenny Ogun making it 4-1 straight afterwards. But Mate Salacan pulled one back for the Penguins with a brilliant effort from 40 yards, before substitute Eoin Kenny;s skilful finish set up a tense finale, but Strand held on for a deserved win on the day. Many thanks in particular to Seaford old boy Ryan McEnroe, now player-coach back at his homwtown club, who went to great length to make the event happen, and we look forward to welcoming the Sligo men to Dublin some day. |
