Ryan Scollard scored two and made one as the Premiers eased to a home win over Manortown United to maintain their spot at the top of the table. The Penguins had raced into a 3-0 lead by the opening minutes of the second half, with their set-piece prowess to the fore in the first half, leading to a header by Lewis Cawley off an MJ Tierney free kick, and a second goal when Al Kennedy's corner was deflected in by a Home Farm defender. Then Chris Monk bagged a third to all-but secure the points, even if the hosts pulled one back later in the second half. The Majors suffered a bad start to their league season with a comprehensive defeat against an accomplished Aungier Celtic outfit at Rockfield Park, with Killian Campion netting a late consolation goal for Seaford. The Premiers had a weekend off competitive action so made the short trip o face Cabinteely FC in Kilbogget Park for a friendly, and emerged with a 3-2 win.
After having the better of the opening exchanges, Seaford fell behind midway through the first half when Cabo took advantage of a midfield ricochet to finish well and open the scoring, but Seaford levelled through Stephen Canavan's deflected strike. The Penguins took the lead after half time when Lewis Cawley tapped in after good work from Desmond Eiffe, only to be pegged back to 2-2 when Cabinteely's striker netted with a slick back-heeled finish. But Seaford fought back to claim the win when Conor Geoghegan headed home Eiffe's corner from close range. The Premiers got their league campaign off to a winning start with a hard-fought 1-0 win against MPFC at Rockfield Park. The winning goal was scored after just five mnutes by Niall Holleran.
Seaford Premiers will start life in LSL Saturday Premier division on Saturday with a home fixture against Montpelier, kicking off at 12.00pm in Rockfield Park.
Paulie Morris's side have nominally been promoted a division during the off-season, but in essence it's the same section in which they finished mid-table during 2022/23. That means they'll renew rivalries with Saturday's visitors, although the game is unlikely to witness as much drama as their previous clash in Blackrock. On that occasion, Collie Barrett netted a quick first-half hat-trick to put the Penguins in a commending position, but they collapsed to trail 3-4 early in the second half, only for another astonishing late turnaround as Cian McCabe smashed home a last-gasp winner to secure the first of what would be three straight home wins for Seaford. In the reverse league match, MP came out on top by 2-1, but Seaford got their own back when the sides met for a third time in the Superleague competition, as a Stephen Canavan brace helped the Penguins to a 4-2 victory. Seaford concluded their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Dublin Hospitals FC at Rockfield Park.
The Penguins hit the front inside three minutes when Mike O'Neill nodded in a typically vicious corner kick delivery from MJ Tierney, but the medics leveled through Brian Gaffney on 13. Seaford had the better of the play for the rest of the half, but the doctors had a strong spell early in the second, with Seaford indebted to Oisin Geoghegan for a couple of smart saves. But the hosts finished strongly and secured the win courtesy of Tierney's spot kick after a foul on Shane Gilroy. |
