Match Report: Tallaght United 3-2 Seaford FC
LSL Major 1
A much improved Seaford performance, but the same disappointing outcome for the Penguins as title chasing Tallaght United held on for all three points.
The visitors might have been in front inside 15 seconds, as Ryan Scollard dispossessed Mark McCarthy and ran through on goal, only to aim just wide.
Instead, it was a Seaford blunder that got punished inside five minutes, as Dylan Kelly was presented with a simple chance and made no mistake. The same man made it 2-0 on 13 as the league leaders threatened to run amok, but Scollard pulled one back for the visitors when he smashed home from the edge of the box after a brilliant flick-on by Jack Keegan.
Tallaght restored their two goal advantage, courtesy of a close-range header from giant defender Jamie Murray nodding home Robert Baxter’s whipped free-kick, but again Seaford fought back, making it 3-2 when Al Kennedy flicked a Rob O'Shea corner to Scollard who buried the header.
It was almost all-square immediately after half-time, when Keegan took advantage of Scollard‘s industry, only to be denied by a superb stop by Stephen Kelly.
The hosts largely controlled possession during the second half, but with Seaford maintaining a threat via swift counters sparked by their young midfield pairing of O’Shea and Timi Silva.
Tallaght’s lively winger Kelly ought to have competed his hat-trick but blazed over, and substitute Aaron Brady squandered a golden chance when through one-on-one, but it was the Penguins who finished stronger , and only a marginal offside call denied Scollard a last-minute leveller when Matteo la Placa had fed him a clever through-ball.
A fifth straight league defeat leaves Seaford rooted to the foot of the table but with renewed optimism after a strong display.
