Match Report: Tallaght United 1-0 Seaford Rock United
LFA Junior Cup
Seaford crashed out of the LFA Junior Cup after a frustrating afternoon in Celbridge.
The hosts bagged the only goal of the match midway through the first half, as Jamie Murray carried the ball forward from centre half. Karl Cummins was clearly offside from the through-ball , but Gary Kearns wasn’t, and Seaford defense had tuned out allowing the striker to run in on goal and slot home.
If Tallaght had edged the game until that point, Seaford had the better of it from then on. Ryan Scollard intercepted a miscued clearance from keeper Adam Niland, but drilled his shot just wide, and Paul Tansey fired just over shortly after, before Mate Salacan aimed a free kick just off target.
Tallaght had a huge let-off at the start of the second half when the referee failed to spot a clear handball by Niland outside his area as a Scollard sped by him, and they almost took full advantage moments later when Robert Baxter squared to Kearns but he failed to hit the target from six yards.
Seaford took control of the game, crating plenty of chances but firing off-target time and again, such as when Scollard was released by Oisin Geoghegan, and when Dave Lewis was denied by a saving tackle.
The momentum continued to turn in the Penguins’ favour when Tallaght were reduced to ten men on 67, but still the ball wouldn’t go in.
Substitute Elridge Robateau Valois smashed one into the side netting and Conor Geoghegan headed a Darragh Roche corner off the bar.
The hosts employed every trick in the book to run down the clock and produced a fine rearguard action, with Seaford’s final chance falling to Lewis in the 97th minute, after Robateau had nodded the ball into his path, but the Englishman volleyed it too high and that was enough to see the men in red through to round 2
