Match Report: St John Bosco 2-1 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Major 1
Seaford's unlikely promotion hopes finally evaporated as two wondergoals from Miguel Ferreira settled this close game in favour of the hosts.
Bosco played the first half with the strong wind behind them, but neither side created much during 45 minutes of stretched play. Craig Donnelly picked out Alex Taffe with an incisive diagonal through-ball, but the winger was denied by a combination of keeper Oisin Geoghegan and fullback Paul Tansey. Moments later however, Ferreira opened the scoring, spinning in midfield before unleashing a stunning 30 yard strike that gave Geoghegan no chance.
The Penguins rallied, with Ryan Scollard finding an opening only to see his blast at goal blocked by Stephen Mills, and then Mike O'Neill met a Darragh Roche cross at the back post but headed just wide.
Early in the second half, Scollard's searing pace saw him through on goal, but he had to stretch at the ball to get his shot off and it was blocked by Darragh O'Brien. On 58 minutes, Seaford were left wondering how they hadn't scored when a brilliant corner from MJ TIerney caused panic in the Bosco goalmouth, with Stephen Canavan hitting the crossbar amid the scramble, but somehow the ball didn't find the net.
Seaford levelled on 66 minutes when a vicious corner from captain Al Kennedy flew straight into the net, but Bosco restored their lead almost immediately, Ferreira this time producing a sensational volley that rocketed past Geoghegan to make it 2-1.
The visitors needed a seventh straight win to keep any hope of finishing in the top three alive, and launched attack after attack in the closing stages, with Conor Geoghegan stinging O'Brien's palms from the edge of the box, before Sam Browne saw his shot blocked by a defender while the keeper was stranded.
The final whistle finally ended the Penguins' brillaint recent run, and they finish their campaign at home to Home Farm on Thursday.
