Match Report: Seaford Rock United 5-3 Home Farm
LSL Saturday Major 1
Seaford showed a clinical edge to see off Home Farm and boost their promotion hopes in Major 1.
It was a dream start for the Penguins, who took the lead on four minutes, as Conor Fennell broke his duck for the club, volleying h at the back post after a typical burst down the right wing from Ryan Scollard, whose whipped cross wasn’t dealt with by the visitors’ defence.
Home Farm had the better of the rest of opening period, with Cian Hayden clipping the bar with an attempted cross before Niall Hoban slid John Hyland in on goal, but the striker shot just wide, and then Ben Hogan’s deflected free kick forced Neil Howarth into a smart save. At the other end, Fennell nearly got in again when he played a neat one-two with Dan Kennedy, but his effort was smothered.
The visitors levelled shortly before half time through a Cian Flynn penalty, but two quick goals right after half time put Seaford in charge of the game. In the first minute of the second half, some good pressing from the hosts forced an error from Jack Rowan, and Jamie McCaul found the bottom corner from the edge of the box. And when Fennell was cleaned out in the box on 48 minutes , Ian Nolan stroked home the resulting penalty to make it 3-1.
The Penguins continued to look more likely to score, with Scollard setting up a great chance for McCaul, whose side-footed finish was blocked on the line and scrambled away, and shortly after the hour mark Jimmy Hussey almost bagged a sensational first goal for the club, as he sped through the Home Farm defence and scooped the ball over Austin Hannon, but the ball didn’t quite drop under the crossbar.
Instead, it was Brian Murphy who opened his account for Seaford, making it 4-1 with an inch-perfect right-footed finish into the top corner after the ball broke his way following a Hussey corner. Home Farm pulled one back almost immediately, as Hayden’s effort squirmed into the corner of the net, but Scollard made the points safe with a smashing finish in at Hannon’s near post following yet another sprint down the right wing.
Seaford’s substitutions almost combined to add a sixth, as Chris Monk’s flick found Elridge Valois, but the Panamanian’s powerful strike was beaten away by Hannon, and the visitors headed a late consolation goal, which did nothing to dampen Seaford’s celebrations.
