Match Report: Seaford Rock United 3-2 Baldoyle United
LSL Saturday Premier
Seaford’s Premiers made it 10 points from four games with a nervy 3-2 victory on a sunny afternoon in Rockfield Park.
The home side got off to a bright start, with the midfield of Mate Salacan, Owen Brayden and Ciaran Staunton controlling the play. It was Staunton’s burst into the penalty area in the 6th minute that drew a foul from the Baldoyle centre-back. Salacan stepped up to coolly slot home his first goal of the season.
A lightning quick break after 14 minutes from a Baldoyle corner led to the Penguins’ second. Debutant Rob O’Shea played Shane Gilroy in and the Sligo man clipped a superb left-footed strike into the top corner.
Shane Halpin was denied adding to his recent winner at Terenure by the offside flag. The visitors pushed forward to find a away back into the game but David Higgins’s assured handling led and reactions (including one superb tip over the bar in the 37th minute) left it 2-0 at the break
The hosts were reduced to 10 men on 52 mins, so it was a rearguard action for the majority of the second half. The pressure told after 59 minutes with when Stephen Hanaphy lashed in from 15 yards to half the deficit.
However, dogged defending led to the Navys growing in confidence when in the 81st minute, substitutes Eoin Kenny and Francis Mulhall combined, the former showing great pace and tenacity to get to the byline to pull back for Mulhall to score with the aid of a slight defection to make it 3-1.
There was more drama to come when a handball in the box led to a penalty to Baldoyle which was emphatically dispatched by Cian McGregor. A melee led to a Baldoyle forward receiving his marching orders. Seaford held out and head across the city to MP next Saturday, where they hope to continue their positive start to the season
