Match Report: Seaford Rock United 2-3 Terenure College AFC
LSL Saturday Premier 1
It was a frustrating start to the season for Paulie Morris's Premiers as they twice came from behind, but couldn't manage it a third time against a wily Terenure College outfit.
The visitors were ahead inside four minutes when their two wingers combined: Cathal McDonnachadh with an accurate cross for Jamie O'Rourke to head home from point-blank range. And Seaford's keeper Gavin Nugent was pressed into action to deny a second, reacting bravely and brilliantly to smother the ball as Christy Burne bore in on goal
The Penguins were offered a way back into the game when Cian McCabe's pressing caused panic in the Terenure defensive ranks, leading to keeper Shay Cooke handling outside the area. Mate Salacan's free kick found the top corner to level the game. Salacan forced a smart foot-save from Cooke with an effort from a tight angle, but it was the visitors who struck next, again exploiting their aerial superiority as Shane Clarke headed home.
Once more, Seaford fought back, as David Mackey volleyed home a Fionn Geoghegan cross, but Terenure were even quicker to retake the lead, as Pete McEvoy crashed home an unstoppable shot from 20 yards, having pounced on a loose ball
Salacan glanced a header wide from close range to conclude an action-packed first half, but the second half was a sharp contrast: a scruffy affair pockmarked by injury stoppages, with both teams struggling to establish any fluency.
The hosts ratcheted up the pressure in the final minutes, and it seemed only a matter of time before they forced an equaliser. Conor Geoghegan met an Adam O'Shea corner inside the six-yard box but couldn't make a proper connection, before laying in substitute Joe O;Hara cutting in from the left wing, but O'Hara powerful drive was somehow kept out b Cooke. The final action of th game saw Conor Geoghegan's long throw cause chaos in the Terenure goalmouth, as Cooke seemed to have fumbled into the goal, only for a teammate to hack it off the line before the final whistle blew.
