Match Report: Seaford Rock United 2-3 CIE Ranch
LSL Saturday Major 1B
Seaford twice took the lead with brilliant finishes, but were pegged back by CIE Ranch each time, and fell to defeat in their first home match of the season.
The home side had the better of the play in the first half, but there were few chances at either end. Darragh Connolly picked up a second ball early on, but was forced on to his less favoured right foot and couldn’t get purchase on his shot, before Andy Roe volleyed his own rebound just over the bar.
Ranch brought an extraordinary repertoire of set plays, including lining seven of their own players along the Seaford goalline in an attempt to discomfit keeper Simon McGinty, who soared above all of them to punch clear. Others featured the amazing long throws of Dean Dunphy, who picked out Jordan Griffiths with one slingshot, only for McGinty to deny his point-blank header with a stunning reflex save.
The match burst to life early in the second half when Chris Monk met Pawel Politowski’s driven cross with a breathtaking bicycle kick that flew into the corner of the net.
Ranch levelled when Lee O'Sullivan’s strike from range swerved out of McGinty’s grasp and into the net, but Seaford were back in front within moments, when substitute Christian Firth flicked McGinty’s punt into the path of Sam Browne, who lobbed the keeper exquisitely to record his first competitive goal for the club.
It looked certain to be game over on 73 minutes when Firth rounded the keeper and squared for Politowski six yards out, but somehow his blasted effort was blocked by a defender on the goalline, the ball rebounding off the post to safety. Ranch took full advantage of their let-off, when Jason Walsh forced in from close range after yet another set play, shortly before the same man secured all three points when he raced onto a long ball to convert.
