Match Report: Seaford Rock United 2-2 Glenville
LSL Saturday Major 1
Seaford secured the point they needed for survival thanks to an inspired goalkeeping display from Oisin Geoghegan and a 97th-minute equaliser from the peerless bagsman Ryan Scollard.
Glenville brought an aggressive and attacking approach, and had the first opening when Alex Doyle met Ben Hogan’s cross but headed over , but it was Seaford who had the better of the first-half chances.
Scollard was inches from opening the scoring when he met a Jimmy Hussey corner at the back post, and then forced two superb saves from Mark Smith in the space of a minute, firstly after Dan Kennedy had slipped him through on goal, and then from the resulting corner when he got across the near post to test Smith’s reactions with a magnificent header.
Scollard then forced an error from Smith, his panicked clearance falling to Conor Fennell, but unfortunately he was unable to execute the 30 yard lob with his weaker left foot’s with Smith stranded.
Seaford took a deserved lead midway through the half. Hussey produced a brilliant assist to lay Kennedy in and he finished via the far post.
But Glenville fought back and leveled on 33 when another whipped delivery from Hogan was converted by Sean Anney , and the same man ought to have notched again when put clean through but Geoghegan denied him with his first heroic moment of the evening .
If the Penguins had shaded the first half, there was no doubt but that the visitors had much the better off the second. This despite Scollard going close again from a Chris Monk flick-on shortly after the restart.
Geoghegan made a breathtaking stop to keep out David Scully’s point-blank finish, and Scully then revived Sean Foley’s cut-back but aimed his shot inches wide. On 70 minutes, Geoghegan made his most jaw-dropping block of all, somehow reacting with his feet to keep out what seemed a certain Glenville goal .
Seaford were on the back foot, with centre backs Sam Browne and Eoin Mahon repelling heavy artillery, aided by well timed interventions from fullbacks Brian Murphy and Darragh Roche.
It looked like the hosts had done enough for a draw, until Glenville scored in injury time , just as they had done when the sides met earlier in the season. Burly striker Tommy Wynne got on the end of a deflected cross to break Seaford’s hearts.
But not for long.
In the final minute of added time substitute Adam O'Shea found a bit of space on the left wing. Cutting inside on his right, he delivered a perfectly weighted 40-yard diagonal for Scollard to connect with a bullet header that gave Smith no chance, prompting jubilant scenes amongst the bumper crowd at Rockfield Park.
Results elsewhere this evening mean safety is secured for Alan Burns’s side, which had seemed a distant prospect at times during a difficult season on and off the pitch. But the men in navy never gave up, and got their reward.
