Match Report: Seaford Rock United 1-0 Montpelier
LSL Premier Saturday
Seaford ground out a gutsy 1-0 win to see off Montpelier in their opening league match.
Niall Holleran’s goal after five minutes was all that separated the teams at Rockfield Park, with a stout defensive display from the Penguins securing the points in the fact of an MP onslaught in the final 10 minutes.
The game’s only goal originated from a Mate Salacan corner. It was Alex Meany who climbed highest and he thought he’d bagged only for the ball to rebound off Collie Barrett on the goalline. But Dave Lewis retrieved it and squared for Holleran to convert from close range.
Later in the half, Barrett pounced on a loose backpass but MP keeper Tom McDonagh got just enough of a touch to send it dribbling past the post as Holleran sped in to tap it home.
Barrett got in again a couple of minutes into second half after Oisin Geoghegan found him with a pinpoint dropkick, but having stayed on his feet despite being clipped by a recovering defender, he fired wide at the near post.
Holleran thought he’d doubled his tally on 54 but it was disallowed for a foul on McDonagh, but otherwise it was a game of few chances until the dying stages, with Seaford forming a strong defensive shell, comfortably repelling the Monto attacks.
But towards the end of the match MP managed to break through the rearguard and fhe Penguins were indebted to some superb reflex saves from Geoghegan. First he denied Peter Foran with a stunning tip over the bar, before clawing away Dara Reid’s point-blank effort and then diving backwards to divert Graham Egan’s header over the top.
At the other end Francis Mulhall produced a fine finish deep into injury time only to be denied by an offside whistle, but it was immaterial as the full-time whistle blew a moment later to confirm the win for Paulie Morris’s men.
Seaford:, Oisin Geoghegan, Steve Kane , Eddie Xiang, Dave Lewis, David Higgins, (Elridge Valois, 53), Alex Meany (Eoin Kenny, 82), Mate Salacan (Francis Mulhall, 67) , Killian Campion, Niall Holleran (Alejandro Vergara, 72), Conor Fennell, Collie Barrett (Shane Halpin, 78)
