Match Report: Seaford Rock United 0-0 Verona
LSL Saturday Major 1A
Seaford put in another strong performance but couldn't find a winner again Verona.
In a clash between two sides promoted to Major 1A for the new season, neither keeper was seriously tested, as Seaford failed to convert their dominance of possession and territory into clear-cut chances.
The hosts quickly got into their rhythm in the first half, with Steve Kane and Alex Smirnoff combining well down the right side to pin back opposing wing-back Darren Murray, creating plenty of space for the central trio of Sam Browne, Robbie Creevy and Chris Monk to play in.
It was winger Darragh Connolly who had the first opportunity, after being put in by Harry Crowe's header, but he shot just wide with his left. At the other end, Robbie Moran had a very quiet afternoon on his return to first-team action after some eleven years, although Stephen Pearson's free kick clipped his crossbar.
After half time, the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was when Browne crashed a header against the woodwork from a Smirnoff delivery, and Connolly had another good chance when he collected Gavin Walsh's cross in spece in the Verona area, but couldn't bit the target with his volley.
Seaford thought they should have had a late penalty when keeper Eoin Durkan seemed to clear out Smirnoff, who had nicked the ball away from him, but the referee waved play on .
The Penguins, although frustrated not to claim another three points, will draw encouragement from a second good display in their opening week at this level before they travel to face Columbas Rovers on Monday.
