Match Report: Seaford Rock United 5-2 Stella Maris
LSL Saturday Premier 1
Seaford Premiers put three points more on the board following another goal-fest at Rockfield Park against a youthful Stella Maris outfit.
Playing in an unfamiliar system, lining up in a 3-5-2 formation, Seaford had to call on keeper Oisin Geoghegan twice in the opening exchanges. Firstly, he reacted superbly to save Jack Plaice’s point-blank effort. Then, Ciaran McDonald broke the offside trap but Oisin was quick off his line to deny the number 10.
The Penguins found their feet and Jamie McCaul had two long-ranges efforts that sailed wide but indicated that the home side were making their mark on the game. The opening goal came in the 23rd minute, with Fionn Geoghegan’s corner superbly flicked home by Niall Holleran, making it two in two for the wideman.
Holleran almost added a second, when his effort was blocked after McCaul found space on the left of the visitor’s box. Seaford forced three corners in quick succession but could not add to their total.
On the stroke of half-time, Stella equalised, with a scrappy goal forced over the line by Robert Kelly. 1-1 at the interval.
Oisin Geoghegan was tested early in the second half, leaping to his left to deny Robert Carrol within seconds of the restart. However, Seaford reacted positively, retaking the lead in the 59th minute. A sweeping move from right to left led to Holleran finding space to put in a superb cross for McCaul to head brilliantly into the top corner, leaving James Collier stranded.
Three minutes later, Conor Geoghegan’s pass fell to McCaul, who reacted brilliantly to turn quickly and swept home his second. However, in the 65th minute, Pierce was adjudged to have been fouled and Richard Nugent made no mistake from the spot to pull Stella back to 3-2.
Ten madcap minutes of action was completed when substitute Stephen P Kane battled to win a free kick from 35 yards out. MJ Tierney had hit the woodwork 3 times in recent games but made no mistake this time out, with his superb stroke taking a slight nick off the wall to restore the home side’s two goal advantage.
The scoring was completed 10 minutes from time with quick thinking from Fionn Geoghegan and Tierney from a short corner led to the Laoisman drilling a low shot in at the near post, giving the Penguins their biggest win of the season to date. Alex Sinnott almost added a sixth but his low effort was blocked by the feet of Collier
Focus turns to next week as the Premiers look to keep the momentum going after twelve points from the opening six games.
