Match Report: Seaford Rock United 5-0 Wayside Celtic
LSL Saturday Major 1
Seaford turned on the style to secure a landmark win over one of the division's promotion contenders amid gale force winds at Rockfield Park, as MJ Tierney notched two more free kicks to add to his bulging collection..
The match couldn't have been any different from the previous meeting between the sides played in blistering heat in Kilternan in the summertime, when the Penguins were outfought and outclassed by the hosts. This time, the blustery conditions made life extremely difficult for the Penguins during the first half, but Seaford dug in and won their battles all over the pitch, coming in a goal up which gave them the platform to dominate after the break.
The first chance fell to the visitors when an wind-assisted throw-in fell to Jack Saville eight yards out, but he fired wide., Seaford's first chance fell to Dan Kennedy who volleyed just wide after being set up by Chris Monk , and at the other end Oisin Geoghegan had to react well to parry two powerful snapshots from Ciaran O'Connor within a matter of seconds.
His opposite number James Grimes did equally well to deny Darragh Roche's smash at goal, but he could do nothing about Tierney's inch-perfect curler to open the scoring on 29 minutes.
Farhad Patell had the ball in the net for Wayside shortly after but was ruled offside, and the whereas the opening period had been played largely in Seaford's half, it was a different story after the break as the Penguins surged forward to inflict more punishment.
A brilliant saving tackle from Caleb Murray denied Tierney a certain goal early in the second half, but it seemed only a matter of time before the navy blues doubled their lead, and it eventually happened just after the hour in farcical circumstances as Wayisde's Max Jones wrong-fotted Grimes with an attempted backpass that dribbled into the net.
From then it seemed only a question of how many, and Tierney bagged another sensational free kick from near the centre circle on 74, before substitute Dave Lewis nodded in Al Kennedy;s corner.
Deep into injury time, Seaford crowned their win with a fifth goal, as a quick break led to Tierney taking aim from 25 yards. Yet again he gave Grimes no chance, but this time the ball crashed down off the underside of the bar allowing Lewis to tap home his second.
