Match Report: Seaford Rock United 5-0 St James's Gate
LSL Saturday Major 1B
Seaford produced their best performance of the season to rout St James's Gate and lift themselves back into the top half of the table.
The home side made a superb start to the game, taking the lead inside two minutes when Garrett Connolly slipped the ball through to Kohei Masaki, who just about managed to nick in ahead of keeper Ray McDonnell to prod the ball into the net. Connolly might have made it 2-0 within seconds of the restart on another fast breakaway, only for a bobble on the poor surface at Rockfield Park to take the ball out of his path and allow McDonnell to pounce on it.
He didn't have to wait long to notch, however, as he met MJ Tierney 's viciously whipped corner with a back-post header, only for the ball to bounce off the post, off his knee and into the net.
Gate ought to have pulled one back late in the half, as Mick McCormick was presented with what seemed a back-post tap-in, but somehow Simon McGinty and ,Donal Howley managed.to keep the ball from crossing the line. And Seaford put the outcome beyond doubt with a third goal just fifteen seconds into the second half as Tierney fired home from a tight angle. Tierney then set up Darragh Connolly to made it four, with a cleverly disguised through-ball to put the winger in on goal, and the Louth man skipped around McDonnell to slot home.
McGinty flew off his line brilliantly to deny McCormick again, in what was the visitors' best opportunity of the second half, before Masaki completed the scoring in the dying moments from yet another Tierney assist, even if most credit for the goal was due to Howley on account of his a superb burst upfield from full back.
The five-goal margin made it Seaford's biggest win in a year and eases their relegation concerns ahead of a tough tie against league-leaders Rush Athletic in a week's time.
