Match Report: Seaford Rock United 2-1 Lucan United
FAI Junior Cup, Round 2
Seaford moved into the third round of the FAI Junior Cup after seeing off a dogged fightback from Lucan United.
The Penguins flew out of the blocks and their impressive start was rewarded with two goals in the opening twelve minutes.
The opener was in the second phase from a corner, as Ian Nolan did well to find Lewis Cawley on the edge of the box , and Cawley curled a brilliant shot into the net from 20 yards.
Stephen Canavan bagged the second with a left-footed finish after Jim Nolan’s backheel assist, and Seaford generally made the running during the first half, their slick midfield combinations opening up Lucan, even if clear cut chances were at a premium.
But the visitors got a lifeline on 42 minutes when Harry Comey fired home from the edge of the box and they took that momentum into the second half, as dangerman Jamie Ahern beat the offside trap to receive Sean Gallagher’s through-ball, only to see his effort rebound from the post.
Seaford nearly gave themselves some breathing space when Paul Tansey raced on to a brilliant ball from Fionn Geoghegan, but he couldn’t apply the finish with only Jay Behan to beat.
Peter McGee went close to a debut goal with his first touch after coming off the bench but Behan dived to keep his shot out .
At the other end , roared on by a boisterous away following , Lucan gained the upper hand in the closing stages but their muscular forward line was repelled by stout Seaford defending, and David Higgins made several smart stops, the last of which denied Nathan Farrell’s diving header.
The Penguins will face their perennial rivals Kilnamanagh in round three
