Seaford Rock United 2-1 Hyde Park
Vere Deane Cup, Round 2
The seconds made it four wins on the bounce with a satisfying victory over Division 3A high-fliers Hyde Park to progress to the last eight of the Deane Cup.
Seaford looked the better side during the opening period, using their pace in wide areas to great effect, and opened up a two goal lead with strikes on 13 and 19 minutes.
First, Tony Bennett broke down the right wing and drilled a powerful angled shot at goal, which was parried into the path of striker partner Frank Mulhall, who converted from close range.
Minutes later, skipper Tommy Crichlow whopped in a brilliant free kick which cracked off the crossbar, falling perfectly for centre half Darren Grealish to tap home his first ever Seaford goal, in merely his 54th appearance.
Hyde Park grew into the game as the half wore on. They had a goal correctly disallowed just after the half hour mark, as their striker was penalised for barging Dyaln O'Reilly out of the way as he competed for a cross, before a team-mate nodded home. O'Reilly had to be at his best late in the half to block a low shot from the same opponent, before Seaford's towering midfielder Marc Smith was unlucky not to add to the home side's lead with a rasping drive in the dying minutes.
Seaford might had scored in the first minute of the second period when Donal Howley's superb cross was headed goalwards by Shane Lauritsch, but the Hyde keeper managed to keep it out.
And the visitors got back into the game minutes later when their two strikers combined brilliantly to punish an error by Grealish, with a fine cross and a brilliant sweeping finish to give O'Reilly no chance.
Seaford were on the back foot for must of the rest of the half, but in truth it was a resolute defensive display, with O'Reilly rarely called upon to intervene, with the exception of one excellent save with his shins to deny a Hyde midfielder from close range at the midpoint of the half, , whilst at the other end the pace and directness of Seaford's forwards continued to discomfit the visitors.
The final chance of the match fell to Hyde after O'Reilly uncharacteristically dropped a high ball, only to reach brilliantly to deny the Hyde winger's attempted angled finish, and moments later, Les Adamczek's final whistle confirmed Seaford's quarter final berth.
Seaford: D O'Reilly; A Herenda, R Murray, D Grealish, B Kirwan; T Crichlow (c), M Smith D Howley, S Lauritsch F Mulhall,(C McCarron, 75), T Bennett (R O'Riordan, 90 + 1) Goals: F Mulhall (13), D Grealish (19)
