Match Report: Seaford Rock United 2-0 Clondalkin Celtic
Carroll Cup, Third Round
Seaford qualified for the last eight of the Carroll Cup with a home win against a spirited Clondalkin Celtic side.
The home side had the lion's share of possession during the first half, and went close early on when Conan Murphy, making his first start for the first team, spun well on the edge of the box but fired just wide of the far post. It was another man making his full debut, Robbie Creevy, who opened the scoring on 18 minutes, getting across the near post to guide a superb diving header into the net from MJ Tierney's whipped corner kick.
Clondalkin ought to have equalised on 38 minutes when Joseph Grogan met Stephen Murphy's delivery with an unmarked header three yards out, only to head over the bar, and Seaford winger Darragh Connolly forced a fine save out of Manus Smith in first half injury time.
Chances were at a premium for most of the second half, although Smith again denied Connolly on 53 minutes, backpedalling brilliantly to tip the Louth man's long-range lob over the bar.
Creevy headed inches wide after bravely competing for Smith for a high ball, and Tierney hit the post, but Seaford were unable to find the decisive second goal. At the other end, Eoin English didn't make a save of note, but flew off his line to snuff out Clondalkin's best attacking move of the half, taking a heavy blow for his troubles.
Deep into added time at the end of the match, Tierney succeeded where Connolly had failed, collecting the ball inside his own half and, seeing Smith off his line, produced an inch-perfect drilled finish from more than 50 yards that dropped inches under the crossbar and put the outcome beyond doubt.
Seaford: Eoin English Steve Kane Paul Tansey Fionn Lawlor, Alan Brennan, Andy Roe (Fionn Geoghegan, 41), Robbie Creevy, , Darragh Connolly (Neil Harrington, 85) Conan Murphy (Colin Kane, 80), MJ Tierney, Garrett Connolly (Eoin Mahon, 73). Goals: Creevy (18), Tierney (90 + 4)
