Match Report: Pegasus St James's Athletic 0-2 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Premier 1
Seaford finished off their league campaign with a dogged away win, to make it just one defeat in ten in all competitions during the second half of the season.
In windswept conditions it was difficult for either side to play cohesive football, but Seaford made the better fist of it and were worthy winners on the day.
The visitors hit the front inside a quarter of an hour, when Colin Barrett's whipped cross was diverted into his own net by Colin Carrick. The closest Pegs came to an equaliser was when Eoin Kenny met John Kingston's corner with a bullet header that was somehow kept out of the top corner by Darragh Roche's superb header off the line.
Otherwise, Seaford continued to prosper down their right side. Steve Kane and Matty Sheehan began a brilliant sweeping move downfield to free Barrett, and eventually MJ Tierney, whose cross nearly found Chris Monk at the edge of the six yard box, but the ball wouldn't quite sit down for him as he tried to apply the finish. Late in the half, Roche made a burst forward from fullback, delivering an exquisite cross which Barrett met eight yards out, only to steer his half-volley just over.
Barrett did eventually get on the scoresheet on 65 minutes, benefitting from his strike partner Carl Doyle's tenacity to win the ball off a navy blue defender before running through on goal to slot home.
Seaford were indebted to Robbie Moran who spread himself brilliantly to deny Frank Scannell on a one-on=one, before in the dying moments Monk was centimetres from a very late goal of the season contender, weaving diagonally into the box, leaving four opponents in his wake before steering it just the wrong side of the post.
Seaford: Robbie Moran, Darragh Roche, David Mackey, Adam Finnegan, Steve Kane, Matty Sheehan (Rory O'Huiginn, 59), Gavin Walsh (Adam O'Shea, 88), Chris Monk, MJ Tierney (Grégoire Liger, 88), Colin Barrett, Carl Doyle (Peter Tierney, 88)
Pegasus St James's Athletic: James Mulvaney, Graham Carrick, Diego Crosta (David O'Mahony, 82), Killian Murphy, Colin Carrick (Nick Ryan, 74), Neil McDonnell, Frank Scannell, Mark Kelly, Eoin Kenny, David Walsh (Kevin O'Leary, 62), John Kingston
