Match Report: Old County 3-2 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Major 1
Seaford went agonisngly close to nicking a brilliant point away to all-conquering Old County, but returned home empty-handed despite a superb battling performance.
The slick hosts took control of the game early on and should have opened the scoring inside two minutes when a sensational cross from Lee Gibson found Jordan O’Neill at the back lost, but he side-footed off-target.
Gibson then slipped Callum Keane through on goal only for Oisin Geoghegan to save smartly with his feet but Geoghegan could do nothing about the stunning opened from Lee Coleman, the full back picking up a second ball following corner and despatching a screamer into the top corner.
Seaford had the ball in the ball net late in the half when Chris Monk converted a quickly taken free kick but the referee pulled it back and ordered a re-take.
Not for the first time recently, the Penguins flew out of the traps after half time and Monk was involved in everything. First, he received a through-ball from Ian Nolan and found room to shoot, only to be denied by Morgan Daly. Then he went close with a spectacular effort, but his volley on the full from MJ TIerney’s delivery was just too high.
But on 55 minutes it was third time lucky for the Scot, who soared highest to force the ball over the line after Conor Geoghegan’s back-post header.
Old County showed why have completely dominated the division with two quick goals to pull clear in the game. The first was a Keane penalty after the ref spotted a handball during a goalmouth scramble, and then Victor Godfrey dug out a splendid right-wing cross, which O’Neill nodded into the corner of the net.
The visitors weren’t finished yet, however, and after emptying their bench they made it 3-2 with ten to play. Lewis Cawley whipped in a terrific cross which Ryan Scollard met with a towering header, giving Daly no chance.
Scollard was running Old County ragged now, and it was no surprise when he created a golden chance as the game ticked into injury time, curling a sensational ball into the danger area, but Jamie McCaul was unable to get the vital touch with Daly rooted to his spot, and the hosts claimed all three points.
