Mount Merrion Youths 0-1 Seaford Rock United
LSL Sat Div 3
A scruffy performance, but a fine result for Seaford's seconds as they recorded back-to-back wins for the second time times season.
His squad decimated by injuries and availability, caretaker manager Baz Kirwan was forced to use Mikey Kane as an emergency right back, with Piers Shelton dropping for the first team to start in central midfield.
It was a scrappy enounter throughout. Man-of-the-match Dylan O'Reilly made several impressive first half saves, first sparing Seaford's blushes with a reflex stop during a goalmouth scramble pockmarked by failed attempts to clear the ball, before using his foot to deny Leon Tangney's superb backheeled effort.
In between, Frank Mulhall had given Seaford the lead, running onto Kane's clearance before controlling with his check and lifting lobbing Killian Carthy with an outstanding lofted volley
The home side were given a golden chance to equalise when the referee pointed to the spot, penalising Collie Barrett's foul on on Daniel Bickers, but O'Reilly made a splendid save to keep out Josh Knipshild's penalty.
Mount Merrion largely dominated the second half, but Seaford sat deep, defended doggedly and frustrated the hosts. The closeset they came was on 51 minutes when Tangney, their most dangerous players, burst infield from the left wing only to see his 20-yard striker clip the post with O'Reilly rooted to the spot.
Tangney was guilty of a glaring miss with thirteen minutes to pay, failing to punish Kane's error when he blazed over the bar from 15 yards. The closest Seaford came to doubling their lead was when substitute Paidi O'Fatherta was teed up by Shelton and unleashed a rocket of a right-footed shot which Carthy somehow managed to tip onto the post, only for Shelton to side-foot the rebound over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
It was far from a classic, but Kirwan will be heartened by the level of desire shown by his charges to secure all three points.
