Match Report: Larkview Boys 0-1 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Premier 1
Seaford played good football in the first half, and winning football in the second, to secure a second consecutive win.
The Penguins started brightly, their midfield snapping the ball off their counterparts in white, and had the ball in the net within ten minutes. Owen Brayden zipped a fine pass in to Ryan McEnroe, whose first-time finish was emphatic, but was disallowed for offside. Then McEnroe mugged Eoin Buckley and, bearing in on goal, unselfishly laid in Colin Barrett, who was unable to get his shot away as the defenders recovered.
At the other end, Larkview should have hit the front when Jack O'Dwyer missed his kick entirely from eight yards after being laid in by speedy winger Derry O'Reilly, before Seaford's Oli Wright went agonisingly close to converting Brayden's whipped free kick at the back post.
The turning point in the match arrived in the final minute at the half. Larkview's Mark Murnaghan put Peter Corry in behind the defence, but the fullback fired just wide. Seaford broke quickly down the other end, winning a throw-in near the corner flag. Receiving the ball with his back to goal and few options, Jack Burke hooked the ball over head head into the danger zone, where Sean Patchell spilt the ball into his net under pressure from Barrett.
A change in shape saw Larkview's skilful substitute Murnaghan come to the fore in the second half, and he started taking on shots from all areas of the field. Barry Ensor did well to beat away one fiercely hit strike, before he fired one left of the post and another right, both from long range. For Seaford, Wright was again inches from converting at a set piece, and twice winger Chris Monk got in behind the hosts' defence, but was unable to find a maroon shirt.
Ensor's best save was a full-stretch parry to divert a ferocious Murnaghan free kick past the post, as Larkview continued to ratchet up the pressure. Their final chance fell deep into injury time from in indirect free kick sixteen yards out. Yet again it was Murnaghan who took aim, but the Seaford defence held firm, repelling the ball to secure a dogged win.
