Match Report: Blackrock College 2-1 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Major 1
A dismal second-half capitulation cost Seaford as Blackrock deservedly took all three points in the local derby.
The hosts should have been ahead inside five minues when, from a counter-attack following a Penguins corner, ex-Seaford schemer James O'Neill laid Rob Young clean through on goal, but the winger shot too high.
Instead, it was the visitors who hit the front early on, featuring another man playing against his old club, as Paul Tansey bagged a rare goal. The goal owed much to Ben Kelly who did brilliantly to win a crunching tackle in midfield and then release Tansey, who lashed the ball past Gavin Sheridan from the edge of the box.
Blackrock had the better of the remainder of the half, with both O'Neill and lanky striker Gary Galvin looking dangerous. Galvin found space to unleash a shot from range which Oisin Geoghegan collected comfortably, and although O;Neill's set piece deliveries were well defended by Seaford, he saw one cross flash across the edge of the six yard box as teammates lined up to convert it.
Shortly after half-time, Galvin levelled it with a well taken left-footed finish, after the Penguins had left themselves hugely exposed to another counter-attack.
That seemed to sap Seaford's momentum completely, and although Ryan Scollard did well to spin on the edge of the box and whip a shot at goal, it was a quiet evening for Sheridan overall.
Blackrock didn't create too many clearcut opportunities either, but crucially they did work one nicely for O'Neill, who curled into the far corner from 15 yards to settle the match in College's favour.
Seaford:, Oisin Geoghegan, Eoin Mahon (Darragh Connolly, 61), Brian Murphy (MJ Tierney, 69), Luke Hedderman, Al Kennedy, Rob O'Shea, Ben Kelly, Chris Monk, (Elridge Valois, 69), Paul Tansey, Jamie McCaul (Stephen Canavan, 51) Ryan Scollard
