Match Report: Beggsboro 3-6 Seaford Rock United
LSL Sat Major 1c
Seaford rattled in six unanswered goals to secure an extraordinary comeback win against promotion rivals Beggsboro.
The firsts had yet to earn three points in a match against one of the other top sides in Major 1C, and it looked as though that run would continue as Beggsboro made much the better start to the game and raced into a two-goal lead within the opening 20 minutes.
Keeper Eoin English made a rare error for the opening goal, allowing a low shot to bobble through his hands, and he was beaten a second time by the Beggsboro striker, produced a classy lob to make it 2-0
A crucial turning point in the match arrived with ten minutes remaining in the first half. From a corner kick, the home side appealed for a penalty following a challenge by Seaford skipper Mike O'Neill. Instead the ball was cleared, with Seaford's Mark Sullivan giving chase, and finishing brilliantly from an angle to pull one back.
The equaliser was scored by Rory O'Huiginn. Sullivan headed Paul Lydon's right wing cross against the bar, and O'Huiginn followed up to finish.
The game swung in Seaford's favour early int the second half when Sullivan, whose pace and dynamism discomfitted Beggsboro's leaden defence throughout, was put through on goal again and managed to nick the ball past the home side's keeper, who had raced out of his box. The hapless custodian floored Sullivan and received his marching orders.
With a numerical advantage and swagger in their play, it was only a matter of time before Seaford hit the front, which they did in sensational style with a superb team goal, a fine passing move leading to Mark Cullen's inch-perfect cross for O'Huiginn to nod home.
When Lydon got in on the act by slotting home Sullivan's throughball, it was only a matter of how many the visitors would notch, particularly once the home side were reduced to nine men by a further red card. The fifth was scored direct from Cullen's corner kick, before Sullivan capped a brilliant individual performance with his second and Seaford's sixth.
A late Beggsboro penalty completed the scoring, but the outcome had long since been settled. With another big tie at Greystones to follow, Seaford have bounced back from drawing consecutive blanks with ten goals in two games, and a crucial win to keep pace at the top of the division.
