Match Report: Baldoyle United 1-3 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Premier
Seaford maintained their position on top of the pile in Saturday Premier with a hard-earned win on the northside against Baldoyle United.
The home side had the better of the first half, and had the ball in the net in the opening quarter when Ronan McGee volleyed home, but the whistle had already blown for offisde Kavanagh's centre back partner Jonathan Costello got a let-off shortly after when his attempted clearance was misdirected straight towards his own goal but Conor Fitzpatrick banaged to scramble to prevent the own goal.
Baldoyle went close again following good wor down the left from Jonathan Costello, but Jordan O'Manony's blast at goal was headed off the line by Eoin McArdle.
Seaford hit the front early in the second half through set-piece maestro MJ TIerney, whose 30 yard freekick crashed off the underside of the bar, with Fitzpatrick unable to prevent it crossing the line. That began an extraordinary duel between the two, as Tierney hit three more inch-perfect efforts from range within he space of five minutes, only for Fitzpatrick to produce a brilliant save each time.
But it was no surprise when another Tierney whip brought about the Penguins' second, as Conor Geoghegan peeled away at the far post to nod home corner for 2-0.
Baldoyle continued to pose a threat, with striker Cian McGregor to the fore. He burst through two Seaford challenges and fired at goal. Oisin Geoghegan got something on the shot but was once again indebted to McArdle who saved the day with another goalline intervention. McArdle was cuaght out a few minutes later when Stephen Hanaphy ghosted in hehind him but the winger volleyed just too hight.
There was a potential turning point on 73 when Seaford skipper Steve Kane got his marching orders for a professional foul, and when Eoghan Buckley halves the deficit with ten to play, it looked like it would be a nervy finish for the men in maroon.
But the Seaford rearguard held firm and the outcome was put beyond doubt in the first minute of added time when two replacement Penguins combined, Niall Holleran teeing up Ciaran Staunton to unleash an unstoppable first time shot into the top corner of the net, for his first Seaford goal.
A sixth win of the season keeps Seaford at the summit of the table as they prepare to welcome second-placed Larkview to Rockfield Park in seven days' time.
