Match Report: Balbriggan 1-2 Seaford Rock United
LSL Saturday Division 3
Seaford turned in a superb performance and claimed a significant scalp away from home at league-leaders Balbriggan.
Tony Bennett's side hadn't enjoyed a win since October, but had tended to save their best performances for the matches against the promotion-chasing sides, and having held Balbriggan to a draw at Rockfield Park earlier in the season, they were able to go one better courtesy of a gutsy display.
Winger Richie Mulholland opened the scoring in the first half with a brilliantly taken goal, receiving Mike O'Neill's pass before cutting infield from the left, feigning to curl towards the far post before hooking into the near corner.
Balbriggan largely controlled the match from that point, but they struggled to create clearcut opportunities, as Seaford's back four of Robbie Murray, Shane Lauritsch, Adam Finnegan and Stephen Kelly,- ably protected by Amer Herenda, redeployed in a holding midfield role - comfortably repelled the reds' attacks.
Meanwhile, the visitors maintained a threat on the counter-attack, and in the final ten minutes it was Mulholland who made the crucial intervention, bursting forward into the box before being chopped down. It was a clear penalty, and top goalscorer Peter Tierney smashed the spot-kick home to double the lead. Balbriggan pulled one back almost immediately, setting up a potentially nervy climax, but Seaford held firm to claim the points.
Seaford: Robbie Murray, Shane Lauritsch, Adam Finnegan, Stephen Kelly, Amer Herenda, Mike O'Neill (David Mackeyy, 68) Paidi O'Fatharta, (Coly McCarron, 65), Ryan Scollard, Richie Mulholland (Matt Tappin, 81) Peter Tierney (David Devaney, 88).. Goals: Mulholland (22) Tierney (80, pen)
