Match Report: Aungier Celtic 2-2 Seaford Rock United
LSL Major 1 Saturday
A draw was a fair result at Brickfield Park after an exciting clash that could have gone either way.
Aungier gave the Penguins a sound thrashing when the sides previously met on the opening day of the season but this was a much more closely fought affair, with Seaford deservedly leading at half time before the hosts came back strongly after the break.
It was a much-changed Seaford lineup and the new-look midfield trio of Al Kennedy, Jimmy Hussey and Dan Kennedy took control of the match early on, with Hussey having the game's first shot on target after letting fly with a rasping drive from 25 yards which Aaron Myles gathered comfortably.
At the other end, playmaker Jake Donnelly was a constant threat with his left peg, but his first long-range blast was just off target after he had nutmegged Hussey.
The visitors took the lead on 19 minutes when Stephen Canavan soared at the back post and met an MJ Tierney delivery with a brilliant downward header which Myles couldn’t keep out.
It was 0-2 on 35 minutes when Myles tipped Tierney’s magnificent free kick onto the bar and Dave Lewis stooped to nod home the rebound.
Donnelly went close again for Aungier late in the half but it was after the break when the hosts really began to get a grip on the game.
Player-manager Ger Rowe brought himself off the bench and had an immediate impact, firing home a rebound on 61 minutes, and Aungier should have bagged a second immediately, but Donnelly somehow failed to convert at the back post, from Daire Vince’s cross.
The equaliser arrived with 13 to play, as winger Kane Lennox made the most of a lucky ricochet to finish brilliantly past Oisin Geoghegan.
It was end-to-end stuff from then on as both sides pushed for a winner, with Seaford going closest when Conor Fennell fired just too high after being teed up by Elridge Valois.
But ultimately the points were shared, as the Penguins made it five unbeaten in the league.
Seaford:, Oisin Geoghegan, Darragh Roche, MJ Tierney, Dave Lewis, Oliver Wright (Elridge Valois, 75), Al Kennedy, Jimmy Hussey (Mate Salacan, 88), Dan Kennedy, Conor Fennell (Shane Gilroy, 87) , Rob O'Shea, Stephen Canavan
